Joan Crawford on location at Burnside Plantation (Houmas House) in Darrow, La., filming scenes for  Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964,) Robert Aldrich’s follow-up to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

Buoyed by vodka, buffeted by Bette Davis’ ill winds (Agnes Moorehead told friends that she and Bette engaged in “psychological warfare” against Crawford,) she dropped out and was replaced by Olivia de Havilland.

Charlotte may not have the rattle and snap of Baby Jane, but I like it as much, if not more, despite awful performances and worse accents. Watch a flash of brilliance from Bette Davis in the staircase scene towards the end. If you’ve seen it, you’ll know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t yet, watch for it.
